What if libraries were just the tip of the book-sharing iceberg? What if communities found a way for books to bring them closer together without membership cards or due dates? Hannover, Germany, is making those ideas a reality through community bookcases.

These bookcases stand on the sidewalk, accessible to all. Everyone is welcome to take books, provided they add a few to keep it stocked. Judging from the photo, this particular bookcase has stood for a while, untouched by vandals. Wouldn't it be amazing if this concept could be implemented on a bigger scale? Would it be possible?

You can locate other German community bookcases here.
